What Makes CSC Special?

A blog by Jeremy Rau, University of Toronto, 2nd-year medical student, who spent June-July 2024 @ CSC.

"CSC is one of the most remarkable hospitals in the world, and the six weeks I spent there were among the most unforgettable experiences of my life. On Day 1, it was clear that CSC is a unique place. CSC staff are more accurately described as FAMILY than just a team. The talent and dedication of the Cambodian surgeons and trainees are complemented by their kindness and motivation to learn. This environment is why CSC attracts such impressive international fellows and senior surgeons from around the world who come to teach and learn, sharing these values. What impressed me most? The genuine interest the team took in each patient's story. In the clinic, patients are often asked not just about their medical problems but also about where they come from, what they do for a living, how many people they support, the financial barriers they face, and how their disease impacts their lives. Treatment goals include addressing medical issues and improving overall quality of life. For example, treatments may help a young child with severe spine curvature return have a normal active life or enable a young man to resume work and provide for his family. I believe CSC sets an example that all medical practitioners should follow, and this commitment to patient care is something I will take back with me. I am especially grateful to Saqib, Kate, and Hannah, who generously dedicated their time to teaching while managing their busy clinics and doing surgery each day. CSC allowed me to gain extensive experience in my field of interest, Orthopaedic surgery, and exposed me to pathologies I have never encountered in Canada. As a medical trainee, I had the privilege of receiving hands-on training in the operating room, which improved my surgical skills in ways that are rarely achievable at such an early stage of training in any other hospital.  Thank you to Jim and everyone at CSC for having me!"

CSC does not charge a fee to cover administrative costs, access to resources, supervision, and other expenses related to student training.
